Vettel explains Milan event crash

Sebastian Vettel has claimed that using Kimi Raikkonen's wheel was partly behind his embarrassing crash at Ferrari's appearance at a Formula 1 live event. Vettel pranged the front wing of a 2018-spec car in Milan as the Italian Grand Prix week gets off to a shaky start for the Scuderia.

Footage emerged on Wednesday of Vettel driving straight into barriers at a tight left-hander during the event.

The German has suffered a few crashes in grands prix this season, but the issue is unlikely to come back to haunt him at Monza.

"I apologised," Vettel said. "I went with the car and the steering wheel of Kimi, who had the clutch on the other side.

"I didn't think about it, and at that point I was too fast.

"I asked if it would be possible to change the wing to do two more laps for the fans.

"Obviously it was my mistake, but that's OK."

Ferrari head to their home race as favourites for a first Monza win since 2010 after Vettel completely dominated Lewis Hamilton at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend.

He said: "It's a special weekend for us and the team and I feel it as well.

"We hope to give Monza great emotions and with this Ferrari I know that we can do a great race.

"For us this race is a championship. I know it has created enthusiasm for the fans and I hope to be able to dream with them."
