Rosberg: Red Bull running out of patience with Verstappen

Former F1 world champion Nico Rosberg has launched a criticism of Max Verstappen in the wake of the Monaco Grand Prix, insisting that his team Red Bull must be 'running out of patience with the driver's mistakes throughout this campaign.

Verstappen started from the back of the grid after suffering a penalty as a result of a gearbox change following a a crash in FP3 on Saturday, the latest in a long line of incidents that have befallen the Dutchman this season.

The young driver battled through the field to finish in a respectable ninth given his starting position, but could only watch on in envy as Ricciardo sealed victory despite suffering from power problems which limited his car to only six gears.

Speaking to Sky after the race, Rosberg gave his opinion on Max's current position, stating: "They have to be running out of patience with him. That's clear.

"I hope he starts to really think about his approach, it's too much and it's costing him so much. If he wants to win the world championship ever, he has to start learning."

Reflecting on his own performance, Verstappen felt that ninth was as good as he could do and getting into a potentially dangerous situation where a crash could occur is simply 'not an option' for him any more.

He said: "I managed to squeeze past a few drivers, which was good, I think we had the right strategy to stay out and extend that first stint, even if the ultrasoft wasn't the best on this track today. I think we maximised the result. It was a bit of a train from fourth until ninth. I don't think we could have done more from starting last.

"Today I didn't want to go too risky and have a crash. I cannot be in that position now. If I had taken a bit more risk I wouldn't have got past the drivers in front of me.

Reflecting on Ricciardo's win, he added: "I think this is the best track to have a problem, because you can't really overtake and we have a good car with traction. I think Daniel is experienced enough to handle that and he did a great job today."
