Kimi Antonelli roared back from 19th on the grid to take an incredible victory at his home race of the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday at Monza, hunting down his Mercedes team-mate George Russell in the dying laps for a famous win.

If there was any remaining doubt that Antonelli will hoist the F1 drivers' championship trophy at the end of the year, his drive on Sunday has dispelled it.

Wherever the season ends, in Abu Dhabi, Imola, or anywhere else, the sport will have a new youngest ever champion.

Russell was helpless to stop the 20-year-old from catching him and passing him on the 50th lap of the 53-lap race, having scythed through the field to reach the other Mercedes with relative ease.

Earlier on, a massive Lap 3 crash for Charles Leclerc at the Parabolica saw the race red flagged for around half an hour, the Ferrari driver losing control on the outside of the high-speed final corner and spearing into the barrier.

That red flag period and the second standing start which followed it allowed Antonelli to pick off the vast majority of the cars which started in front of him, getting up into the points within half a dozen laps and flying toward the front of the field.

Lewis Hamilton also had to make up some places at that second restart, having dropped as low as tenth when Leclerc shoved him wide at the opening chicane on the first lap. He worked to mix it up with both McLarens as they worked past Pierre Gasly's Alpine, the Frenchman sliding back down the order after his unlikely pole position.

By that time though, the flying Silver Arrow of Antonelli was already up and past that pack of theoretical contenders, swapping the lead back and forth with team-mate George Russell before a timely virtual safety lap allowed him to take a cheap stop to swap out his worn medium tyres for a fresh set, while Russell stayed out on his hard compound set.

Hamilton, bizarrely, didn't come in and rid himself of his own medium tyres under that VSC period despite having been complaining about them on team radio, struggling to sixth place on that well-scrubbed rubber some way behind Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who spent much of the race squabbling in various pairings.

A word, too, for Gasly, who drove a sensible race to take what was eventually a comfortable seventh place finish after his staggering Saturday run.
