After 18 rounds of the 2025 F1 championship, McLaren have claimed the constructors' trophy, but who will come out on top in the drivers' standings and will they have to worry about a race ban before the season finale?
Ahead of the US GP later this month, McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are safe from the threat of a race ban as things stand. But with the drivers’ title still mathematically possible for reigning champion Max Verstappen to retain, he will need to tread carefully with nine penalty points to his name.
Neither the Dutchman or any of his F1 rivals picked up any points at the Singapore GP in early October, but prior to that, the FIA have confirmed that one F1 star had their penalty points tally doubled after a collision with a rival during the race in Baku.
September’s Azerbaijan GP forced Williams driver Alex Albon to sit back and watch his team-mate Carlos Sainz claim the team’s first podium since 2017, whilst Albon only managed to cross the line in P13.
As a result of finishing outside the top 10, he failed to add any championship points to his name, but he did earn two more penalty points after the FIA announced his full punishment for a questionable move during the race.
On lap 17 of the 51-lap event, the 29-year-old made contact with Franco Colapinto, sending the Argentine racer spinning, with his Alpine ending up facing the wrong way on the track.
Colapinto managed to get going again, but the stewards determined that Albon was ‘wholly responsible for the collision’. As a result, he was slapped with a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points, doubling his previous total of two up to four.
F1 penalty points last for 12 months and if any driver goes above the threshold of 12 in that timeframe, they will be handed a race ban. The stars currently in danger of such a fate are Verstappen and Haas driver Ollie Bearman.
In this year’s Italian GP, Bearman picked up two penalty points on top of a huge penalty that was given to him for causing a collision with Sainz.
The first of his points doesn’t expire until November 2, meaning he has two more grand prix weekends to complete without picking up any more points.
Verstappen may not have picked up any further points since the Spanish GP, but the threat of a race ban still looms over his season. With nine to his name and none of them expiring until October 27, Verstappen is still just three away from a race ban, and will need to avoid picking any more up in Austin or Mexico.
Below this table are the details of each individual driver's points, what they received them for and when they'll expire.
