Under-pressure Red Bull driver Alex Albon has no doubt he is "heading in the right direction" as he fights to save his seat in the remaining three races of the season.

While Red Bull has not yet confirmed the Thai-British driver for next season, team principal Christian Horner has stated he remains the number one option, although he still needs to give them reason to retain his services.

Albon led an F1 lap for the first time in his career at the last race in Turkey and despite ending up seventh he is confident he can fend off Sergio Perez and Nico Hülkenberg and retain his place for 2021. "Turkey was a strong weekend and I’m confident we’re headed in the right direction," said Albon. "On my side, things have been getting better and I was happy with the car on the simulator.

"Now I’m looking forward to arriving in Bahrain and seeing what we've got."

Albon, who joined the team during last season as a replacement for Pierre Gasly, has struggled to match team-mate Max Verstappen but did claim a podium finish at the Tuscan Grand Prix five races ago.

The 24-year-old, who also ran well in Turkey before fading tyres led to him spinning twice, added: "It was a good weekend for me and we tried some things on my car which we think made it more predictable.

"As a team, we were also very strong and considering how well we started the weekend it was a little frustrating to come away with so little but there are a lot of positives to take from Turkey."
