Max Verstappen was left 'super frustrated' with a sixth place finish claiming he could only "try and survive" after a heart-stopping spin during the early stages in Istanbul.

Verstappen was battling Racing Point driver Sergio Perez for second position when, at the flat-out turn 11, he lost control of his Red Bull and span wildly up the back straight.

The Dutchman pitted immediately to replace his heavily flat-spotted intermediate tyres and, although able to recover some of the time lost, then got caught up in the midfield traffic.

"[It was] Very frustrating to be honest," he told Sky Sports F1.

"I tried to follow Checo through the kink and suddenly I just massively washed out. You get onto the green bit, big spin, trying to keep it out of the wall of course and flat-spotted the tyres.

"After that, I very quickly caught up with the guys but you can't pass, there is just one line around here and that line was already slippery. Super frustrating. We were just waiting for people to pit or whatever."

"The fact the track was not really drying, you had to keep going on intermediates but at one point, when you start wearing the rubber of the intermediate, you are just sliding over that rubber everywhere so really, really difficult.

"Just following, no grip, trying to survive. Definitely not a great day but hopefully we will never be in this situation again that it is so slippery anyway."
