Ricciardo conducts private 'shoey' after revelling in "shock happiness"
It was Ricciardo's first podium for almost two and a half years
Daniel Ricciardo was left to conduct a private 'shoey' after being so overcome with "shock happiness" he forgot his customary podium celebration.
Ricciardo has become renowned throughout his time in Formula 1 for drinking champagne from one of his sweaty race boots while on the podium after clinching a top-three finish.
After claiming third at the Eifel Grand Prix for his first podium since his win in Monaco in 2018, and Renault's first since Malaysia 2011, the tradition was seemingly ignored on this occasion.
When asked afterwards as to why he failed to perform it, a clearly stunned Ricciardo said: "This is really bad! I forgot all about it. I literally forgot about it.
"I tell you why, because as soon as they'd done the champagne, Max [Verstappen] was already spraying me, and for the first time ever they chilled the bottles.
"Normally the champagne is luke-warm, but this was freezing - or maybe just because it's so cold outside! So I was just shocked with cold and I didn't even...Wow! I'm actually sad now."
But Ricciardo made up for it later in the sanctity of his room in the Renault motorhome, and via an Instagram video, he is seen pouring champagne into his right boot before drinking from it.
"The shoe is off," said Ricciardo. "I think I was so caught up in the podium and obviously it's been a while. Everyone afterwards was like 'Why didn't you do a shoey?'. I was like 'Oh man!' So anyway, here it is. Belated but better late than never."
After taking a long swig of the bubbly he jokingly describes it as "mother's milk".

Earlier reflecting on an achievement he claims felt like his "first podium", Ricciardo said: "There’s like that feeling when you get out of the car and go and hug the team, getting slapped on the helmet, getting a nice headache, it’s a bit of a shock happiness, but we know we did it.
"It’s the first one with Renault, so the first podium with a new crew. To see Renault there down below the podium, I know it’s a big day for everyone."
