Hamilton matching "icon" Schumacher an "unbelievable" achievement - Wolff
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has hailed Lewis Hamilton's "unbelievable" achievement of equalling "icon" Michael Schumacher's 91 race victories after his triumph at the Eifel Grand Prix.
Hamilton achieved the feat after holding off Max Verstappen at the Nürburgring, a circuit Schumacher made his own with five victories during his career.
The reigning champion was presented with one of the great German's helmets by son Mick Schumacher in parc ferme post-race, and Wolff believes Schumacher senior would be content after claiming his milestones were there to be beaten.
"It is unbelievable that Lewis has reached those 91 wins," said Wolff.
"For me, Michael stands above all. He is an icon, and personally, equalling that record and us equaling the Ferrari record last year is almost surreal.
"Records are there to be broken and I think that is what Michael said as well.
"Lewis is still on his journey, but maybe there is somebody in nursery or school that will someday go for the Lewis record as well, and that is how it should be."
Hamilton himself stated post-race he was "incredibly honoured" to have matched the former Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes driver.
"You grow up watching someone and idolise them in terms of the quality of driver they are, what they are continuously able to do year-on-year and week-on-week with their team," said Hamilton.
"Just seeing his dominance for so long, I don't think anyone, especially me, could imagine I would be anywhere near Michael in terms of records."
