Sainz hopeful of another Monza podium celebration with 100,000 Ferrari fans
Sainz hopeful of another Monza podium celebration with 100,000 Ferrari fans
Carlos Sainz is hopeful his first podium at Monza will not be his last once he moves to Ferrari from next season.
McLaren driver Sainz scored the best result of his 109 starts in Formula 1 by finishing second in a crazy Italian Grand Prix behind first-time winner in AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly.
Despite the Spaniard's brave attempt to overhaul the Frenchman in the closing stages, Sainz had to settle for the runner-up spot, finishing just 0.415secs adrift of Gasly.
While the podium ceremony lacked the spectacle of those when Monza is rammed with fans, Sainz is looking forward to the chance of a future opportunity to celebrate with them.
"What I’m sure is, if there would have been tifosi, they would have been pretty happy and proud and that makes me excited about the future," said Sainz.
"Also a bit gutted that there was no one down there, apart obviously from my team and everyone involved in Formula 1, but it makes me excited and makes me look forward to the future.
"Hopefully it’s my first podium in Monza, not my last, and hopefully many will come with Ferrari. I’m ready for it, I cannot wait for it to happen. I just cannot imagine what it would have been like with 100,000 people.
"We get to finish on the podium in the coolest race of the season and no one is there to see us. Hopefully, we will get it in the future. I think we all have the potential to do it again so let’s see."
