Chinese Grand Prix and Sanya ePrix under threat after Coronavirus outbreak

An outbreak of the Coronavirus in China has seen China's General Administration of Sport issue a directive, cancelling all sporting activities in the country until April.

At the time of writing, the Coronavirus has invected over 1,300 people and has taken 41 lives in China. Cases of the virus, which causes pneumonia-like symptoms, have also been reported in Europe and the U.S. and the World Health Organisation are working to understand and contain the virus.

As a result of the further reports of the virus away from China, the country has been put into lockdown.

As far as motorsport is concerned, the Sanya ePrix is under the most threat of cancellation with the races having been scheduled for March 21.

However, a spokesperson for Formula E told Motorsport.com, "The uncertainty stemmed from an incorrect statement issued locally in China, which published wrong and misleading information and has since been removed.

“Nevertheless, given the current health concerns, we are continuing to closely monitor the situation as it develops on a daily basis.”

The Chinese Grand Prix sits outside of the restriction, the Grand Prix due to take place on April 19 and it is believed that Formula One are monitoring the situation.
