Magnussen to clarify ring confusion

Kevin Magnussen will seek clarification from the FIA over its jewellery rules after ditching his wedding ring for fear of a hefty fine.

At the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, the drivers were reminded of regulations that prohibit the wearing of jewellery while competing.

The FIA has determined drivers will be fined £42,000 [$52,000, €49,000] for a first offence. Repeat offences will then rise up to £215,000 [$250,000, €252,000].

The regulation, however, is understood to refer only to piercings, chains and watches, with wedding rings now permitted, something Magnussen was unaware of.

"I didn’t understand why there was such a focus on that when perhaps there were bigger things to worry about," said Haas driver Magnussen.

“But I took it off. Once they said it was a €50,000 fine that was it, I put it right in my drawer. I’m not going to take the risk.”

Confirming he has not worn his ring in the race car since Miami, Magnussen explained he will seek advice from the FIA before returning the band to his finger.

"Maybe I will have to look into it more, I like wearing my wedding ring," the Dane added.

“I will go and check first of all that is correct. If it is allowed that I can wear it, I will wear it.”
