Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has declared chief technical officer Adrian Newey to be "in good shape" following a cycling accident during the August break.

In reports last month, advisor Helmut Marko described Newey's crash, in which it is understood he sustained a head injury, as "violent", while he also required "several operations".

Newey returned to the track for the Turkish Grand Prix and was again present at the latest round in the United States.

Suggested to Horner the incident had been kept under wraps and asked how much of a boost it was to have Newey return, he replied: “Obviously, things get blown out of proportion sometimes.

"Obviously, he had an accident whilst he was on holiday and thankfully he’s back fully fit and has been for a few weeks now.

“He was in Istanbul and in Austin so he is in good shape.”

It is understood that upon his return, Newey identified issues with the set-up of the RB16B, leading to immediate changes.

Red Bull has since secured strong results, finishing second and third in Turkey and first and third in the United States.

The results have allowed Max Verstappen to open up a lead of 12 points over Lewis Hamilton in the drivers' standings, while the team has closed the gap to Mercedes in the constructors' championship to 23 points.
