Horner criticises as "a mistake" potential future engine tweak

Suggestion is teams will be forced to run only two PUs per season

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has criticised as "a mistake" suggestions all F1 teams will only be allowed to use two power units per season.

Under the current regulations, teams are allowed no more than three components - internal combustion engine, turbocharger, MGU-K, MGU-H and energy store - per campaign.

With 22 races this year, all the power unit manufacturers - Mercedes, Ferrari, Honda and Renault - have struggled to adhere to the regulations and have faced penalties.

The first time a fourth of any component is used there is a 10-place penalty. Beyond, that, each subsequent component draws a five-place grid drop.

Addressing the prospect of this year's title race being decided by penalties, Horner feels it is time for the matter to be addressed, particularly if speculation is correct regarding a future change.

“I’ve never been a fan of two engines or three engines," said Horner. "For me, you end up pretty much using four in a season anyway so it’s something we need to look at.

“For the future, there is talk of going down to two engines which I think would be a mistake. It needs to be a sensible balance and is something to look at for the future.”
