Daniel Ricciardo has declared "full attack" on former Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen in the Italian Grand Prix after qualifying second in the sprint.

McLaren driver Ricciardo made up two positions on team-mate Lando Norris and a slow-starting Lewis Hamilton to finish third behind Valtteri Bottas and Verstappen to pick up a championship point in the 18-lap qualifier.

The Australian will be promoted to his first front row start since leaving Red Bull courtesy of Bottas' grid penalty for taking new engine components.

"It has been a long time to be in this position so it is good to be back," said Ricciardo.

"Tomorrow is the important one but we gained a position from Valtteri's problems so we are on the front row and that has been a long time, so very happy for that."

Ricciardo was hit at turn one in the sprint by Pierre Gasly, whose front wing folded at Curva Grande and brought out the safety car.

Asked whether he would be cautious or at full attack, he insisted he would go for it.

"Full attack, full attack and today that is what gave me the chance, a good start," he added.

"I thought I'd get Max in turn one but he had the inside so I look forward to tomorrow."
