FIA stops clock on Belgian GP

The Belgian Grand Prix stewards have stopped the clock on the event in a bid to buy time to at least try and go racing at a soggy Spa-Francorchamps.

The clock began ticking at the scheduled start time of the event of 3pm local [2pm BST].

Inclement weather forced an initial 25-minute delay to the start of the race before cars left the grid for a formation lap and one 'race' lap behind the safety car.

Races are timed to a maximum allotted time of two hours, with the length of any suspensions added to that time up to a maximum of three hours from the scheduled start of the race.

The clock was counting down towards 6pm local [5pm BST] and the possibility of the race being timed out.

But due to circumstances, the stewards opted to stop the clock with an hour remaining.

A statement read: "In accordance with the powers vested in them under the FIA International Sporting Code, the stewards have decided, in accordance with their authority under Article 11.9.3.o, to stop temporarily the 2021 Belgium Grand Prix at 17:00 hours.

"This decision is taken on the grounds of force majeure."
