Massa warns there will be "consequences" for karting brawlers

An incident involving driver Luca Corberi is to be reviewed by the FIA

FIA karting president Felipe Massa has confirmed those involved in the "disturbing" scenes at the KZ Karting world championship finals in Italy over the weekend will "face the consequences of their actions".

Disgraced 23-year-old Luca Corberi faces the prospect of severe sanctions from the FIA after shining a spotlight on the KZ world championship for the wrong reason.

Instead of talking about the championship success of Frenchman Jeremy Iglesias, it is the antics of Corberi and his father, who owns the circuit, that have caught the attention.

"This behaviour is unacceptable in our sport," wrote Massa. "Those individuals will face the consequences of their actions."

Confirming it will be taking a closer look at the various incidents, the FIA added: "The FIA and ACI [Automobile Club d'Italia] are deeply concerned by the disturbing events that occurred yesterday during the FIA Karting KZ World Championship in Lonato, Italy involving drivers, team members and track officials.

"The FIA has launched an immediate investigation in to the incidents."

Initially the victim after coming off worse off in an on-track coming together, Corberi turned villain as he then approached the circuit and threw the bumper of his kart at the other driver involved in the collision, Paolo Ippolito.

Corberi repeatedly ignored marshals calls to remove himself behind the fences as he strode across the circuit back to the pits.

After the conclusion of the race, both Corberi and his father then attacked 16-year-old Ippolito in the paddock.

High profile drivers including Jenson Button have called for the FIA to issue life bans to both Corberi senior and junior.

As the FIA announced its intention to take the matter further, Corberi took to social media to apologise for his actions.

"I'd like to apologise to the motorsport community for what I've done," wrote Corberi. "There are no excuses to explain why I've done such a disgraceful act. This has been something I have never done in my 15 years of career, and I really hope it won't be seen by anybody else in the future."

He added: "I'm writing today to say sorry, even if it's not enough, because after all the bad things that happened during this event, the worst ever has been done by me, a guy who loves this sport and after the worst day of his life will still remember his good racing memories."
