Hamilton didn't defend himself over Albon crash

Lewis Hamilton opted not to face the stewards at the Brazilian Grand Prix over his late-race collision with Alexander Albon, instead opting to admit his guilt via a Mercedes team member.

FIA race director Michael Masi says the stewards wanted to investigate the collision, despite Hamilton holding his hands up in his immediate post-race interview.

With Hamilton always likely to be punished, he was still present on the podium celebrations alongside Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly, the Frenchman celebrating his maiden top-three finish in F1.

It meant that Carlos Sainz in fourth – himself in line for a first F1 podium – would not get the chance to spray champagne in front of the crowd.

"They were going to do a post-race investigation," said Masi of the Hamilton incident. "So they did summons both drivers. But the team admitted to the breach.

"They came down and said, 'you don't need to summons us, Lewis has admitted it', apparently from what Ron said, and that was it.

"There was an investigation, but you investigate, and you've got the team that comes down and says 'we made a mistake'' it becomes a very simple investigation to the other side!"
