Confident Russell says he'd 'bet his house' on Williams improvement

George Russell claims he would “bet his house” on Williams being more competitive in 2020 than they have been in 2019, and that their car will be ready to hit the ground running after winter testing.

Williams have basically been around to make up the numbers this season, having scored just one point in the constructors’ championship after Robert Kubica took advantage of a crazy German Grand Prix to finish 10th.

The British team’s campaign was almost doomed from the beginning as their car was actually late to arrive for testing in Barcelona - a thoroughly embarrassing situation for them.

Russell assures this kinds of thing won’t happen again.

"I'm 100% sure we won't have the same mistakes next year as we've had this year," said the 21-year-old

"I can bet my house that we will have a car from day one of the winter testing next year, and I'm sure and I'm very confident that we will be more competitive next year.

“We're on a very good trajectory at the moment. Obviously it's always easier to improve when you're starting off at a lower level, but the signs are good that we're on a good way.”

Russell admits that with Williams, more often than not, likely finishing 19th and 20th, it has provided the team with the opportunity to experiment as they ultimately have nothing to lose by trying out new approaches.

"This year's given us a really good opportunity to explore a bit more with set-up, some more extreme set-up items, how we prepare the tyres," he continued.

"If you are fighting in the midfield you'd probably be more reluctant to try something drastic because each weekend could be a possibility for them.

"For us, we know regardless where we'll be, and that gives us an opportunity to gain the learning on certain things like that, or create the best car mechanically.”
