FIA confirm penalty points for three F1 stars in Dutch Grand Prix fallout

F1 has a new name sharing top spot in the penalty point standings after two separate incidents at the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday.

There have been far fewer penalty points handed out in the sport in 2026, thanks to a deliberate move to be more liberal about incidents involving (for e.g.) causing a collision.

Kevin Magnussen became the first driver to be banned for a race for penalty point accumulation in 2024, while Max Verstappen spent significant portions of last year walking a tightrope after a number of incidents on track.

Since changes to the guidelines in the off-season though, the days of the Dutchman being sat on 11 of an allowed 12 points seem far away. Franco Colapinto picked up three points (two for overtaking under yellow flags, one for failing to slow under yellow flags later in the race) to take him to four in total – tied for the most of any driver.

Arvid Lindblad was also hit with his first F1 penalty points for overtaking under double waved yellow flags in the same incident as Colapinto, while Liam Lawson picked up a single penalty point for failing to slow for a yellow flag later on, at the exact same point as the Argentine.

That moves Lawson onto three penalty points and Lindblad onto two.

How do F1 penalty points work?

Drivers are allowed to a threshold of 12 penalty points and if they exceed that at any time, they are forced into a one-race ban for the next applicable race. All points picked remain active for one year before expiring.
