Red Bull-Honda deal would be 'very good'

Toro Rosso technical chief James Key says Red Bull would benefit from ditching Renault for Honda power. Red Bull's current engine deal with the French manufacturer expires at the end of 2018 and their longstanding frustration has led to reports of an impending split.

Red Bull's four-consecutive constructors' titles - matched by Sebastian Vettel's quartet of drivers' crowns - were won with Renault power on board.

However, the hybrid era has seen Mercedes steal a march on the rest of Formula 1, with four titles of their own.

Toro Rosso compounded fears over their partnership with Honda by completing more laps than any other side in the first pre-season test, a stark contrast to McLaren's struggles before leaving Honda for Renault.

With Red Bull linked with making the reverse move, Key says getting Toro Rosso's sister team on board would benefit everyone.

"What Red Bull Racing do is ultimately their decision in the end, but if we can share an engine supplier, it would be very good," Key said.

"I think it’s an opportunity to work closer together on certain aspects, which would be good for both teams. So in that respect I have no issues with it.

"We have a separate deal to whatever Red Bull would have. It's not a combined contract, it's an STR contract for three years as a works deal.

"I think if Red Bull came onboard, it could only be added to that for us."
