Halo "the greatest thing we've brought to Formula 1" - Grosjean after life saved by device
Romain Grosjean has praised the halo for saving his life - after previously being a staunch advocate against.
Grosjean posted a message on Instagram from his bed at the Bahrain Defence Force Royal Medical Services Military Hospital just hours after miraculously escaping from a fireball crash on the opening lap of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
With both hands wrapped in bandages and up on stirrups, a smiling Grosjean said: "Hello everyone. I just wanted to say I am okay...well, sort of okay (waggling his fingers). Thank you very much for all the messages.
"I wasn't for the halo some years ago but I think it's the greatest thing we've brought to Formula 1 and without it, I wouldn't be able to speak to you today.
"So thanks to all the medical staff at the circuit, at the hospital, and hopefully I can write to you quite soon some messages and tell you how it's going."
The halo was introduced in 2018 and it played a pivotal role in what Lewis Hamilton has described as Grosjean's head not being "sliced off".
In 2017, Grosjean said of the halo: "I have made myself clear since the beginning - we don't need anything. I am against every halo or shield or whatever. It is not F1."
Grosjean, who has been cleared of suffering any fractures, is to remain in hospital overnight.
An update from Romain himself. Pleased to see you’re in good spirits! We hope you make a speedy recovery 🙏 pic.twitter.com/njnjjH4GBi
