Vettel disappointed for Schumacher after "boring" Eifel Friday
Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel hopes Mick Schumacher will get another chance to prove himself in a practice session this year after fog ruined any chance of running on Friday at the Nürburgring.
Both practice sessions for the Eifel Grand Prix were cancelled as weather conditions grounded the medical helicopter. As a result Ferrari Academy duo Schumacher and Callum Ilott missed the chance to make their Formula 1 debuts.
For Schumacher, the occasion would have been even more poignant at the circuit his father, Michael, won five times.
After being spotted talking to the current Formula 2 championship leader, Vettel described his disappointment of not seeing the 21-year-old out on track.
"I think for Mick it was a shame because he planned to run today and he didn't run," he said.
"Guys like me have run before. It is obviously a boring day but for him. It would have been a debut in a way but it didn't happen so I hope he gets the day back."
Albeit at a significantly reduced capacity, fans were present in the stands throughout the day as F1 returned to the Nürburgring for the first time since 2013 and Vettel acknowledged Friday was "boring" for all involved.
"[It was] probably the worst for the spectators that were allowed to come, they just didn't get to see anything," he added.
"It is the same for all of us, not very exciting and just waiting for an update and waiting for an update."
Speaking of Ferrari's chances ahead of the race, the four-time champion, who leaves for Aston Martin next season, explained the final result will be a mystery due to the changing climate.
"It all depends on the conditions but it is not ideal," said Vettel. "We haven't been here for a long time so we lose the chance to work on our car but I think this weekend was always going to be difficult with the conditions so we'll see."
