South African Grand Prix - Which race should drop off calendar to make way?

F1 is keen to add the South African Grand Prix to its calendar for the 2023 season, but with limited positions available, something has got to give.

F1 is currently limited by the Concorde Agreement to running no more than 24 races in a season.

Although this year features just 22, the additions of Qatar and Las Vegas along with a potential return of the Chinese Grand Prix would take next year's total beyond the maximum before South Africa is even a factor.

This means at least one race will need to drop off the schedule and the most likely are Spa Francorchamps, Paul Ricard and Monaco.

All three events have their merits with Monaco and Spa among the most iconic F1 venues of all. Although Paul Ricard leaves a lot to be desired as a circuit, grand prix racing began in France.

Then there is the Chinese Grand Prix. With the country still impacted by the pandemic, there is no guarantee that this event would take place even if it were to feature on the calendar.

It is likely that whichever event is dropped would apply to race on a biennial basis alongside another, a situation which appears more and more likely given the increased interest from countries to host F1.
