Grid girls row is 'nonsense', says Todt

FIA president Jean Todt would not be drawn on the issue of grid girls in Formula 1, describing a row over their banishment from the sport as "nonsense". Liberty Media confirmed recently that grid girls would not be used for the 2018 season and beyond due to "societal changes".

Fans were split on the issue of grid girls earlier this year, with Liberty introducing grid kids to show a driver's number on race days instead.

The use of models had become familiar at big events, following their introduction by Bernie Ecclestone as he brought glitz and glamour to the paddock.

Ecclestone was among those to voice dissent, while current drivers also spoke out including Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly.

Liberty said "this custom does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern-day societal norms", and Todt refused to wade in on the issue when speaking at the Geneva Motor Show.

"For me it's no problem. In fact it's a stupid problem," he said.

"I have no desire and no time in my life to discuss grid girls. I'm sorry there's so much talk about a nonsense."

Todt also discussed the future of his former employers Ferrari, who have issued numerous threats to quit F1 over proposed changes to engine regulations and financial caps.

Having served at the Scuderia CEO for 15 years, Todt believes F1 could cope without Ferrari - although he does not want to see them go.

He said: "I love Ferrari, but I'm not worried about them leaving.

"My concern now is about making the right decisions for the future of the sport in general. If we do a good job, then we will not lose the most important participants."
