Michael Schumacher "shows how strong he is every day" - wife Corinna
It is approaching eight years since seven-time champion's skiing accident
Michael Schumacher's wife Corinna has broken her near eight-year silence on the condition of the seven-time F1 champion, insisting he proves his strength every day.
Over that period of time, Schumacher has been cared for by his family at their home on Lake Geneva, with a wall of silence built around his condition since suffering brain trauma in a skiing accident in the French resort of Meribel in December 2013.
An upcoming Netflix documentary, simply entitled 'Schumacher' and due for general release on September 15, has led to Corinna opening up on the day-to-day life that now exists with her husband.
"I miss Michael every day," said Corinna. "But it's not just me who misses him. It's the children, the family, his father, everyone around him.
"Everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here - different, but here. He still shows me how strong he is every day.
"We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond.
"And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will. We're trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.
"'Private is private', as he always said. It's very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael."
Corinna has revealed how close the family came to enjoying a normal life together as Michael had expressed concerns about the condition of the snow in the French Alps, even suggesting an alternative holiday.
"Shortly before it happened in Meribel, he said to me, 'The snow isn't optimal. We could fly to Dubai and go skydiving there'," revealed Corinna.
On December 29, 2013, Schumacher went skiing off-piste, leading to him falling and banging his head against a rock.
"We'd always made it through his races safely," said Corinna. "Which is why I was certain he had a few guardian angels that were keeping an eye out for him.
"I don't know if it's just a kind of protective wall that you put up yourself or if it's because you're in a way naive but it simply never occurred to me that anything could ever happen to Michael.
"I never blamed God for why this happened now. It [the accident] was just really bad luck - all the bad luck anyone could ever have in their life."
