Security increased at Brazil GP following Friday robbery

After an ambush on Friday night which saw members of the Mercedes crew held at gunpoint by armed robbers, an extra police presence will be in place for the Brazil Grand Prix this afternoon.

No-one was injured or hurt during the altercation, though valuables were stolen and one of the Mercedes team had a gun held to their head.

Members of the FIA were involved in another incident, where hooded assailants attempted to smash car windows. The governing body has responded to both, in partnership with the Sao Paolo police.

“Heavy police reinforcements will be on duty for the remainder of the event.” a statement read.

Hamilton reacted to the incident with a series of tweets on Saturday. The world champion alluded to previous occurrences of violence and urged race organisers to do more to protect the professionals working at the event - as well as the spectators.

“I was horrified to hear what had happened. The frustrating thing is I have been in Formula One for 10 years and every year that has happened to someone in the paddock,” said the Englishman.

“It’s for the people at the top to take action to keep everyone safe. It’s no good just the bosses or myself having security – everyone needs to be looked after.”
