Red Bull driver Perez aims to help Max Verstappen defeat Mercedes this season
Sergio Perez has stated he knows what he needs from himself to help new team Red Bull to end the era of Mercedes dominance.
Perez has replaced Alex Albon as Max Verstappen's team-mate after the Thai-British driver endured a difficult 2020 season.
The Mexican, who won his first Formula 1 race at last year's Sakhir Grand Prix, is confident his 11 years of experience will be a key asset to driving Red Bull forward.
"I can bring a lot of experience, knowledge," he said. "I have been in the sport for different teams, different eras and I think I know what I need from myself.
"I also think I can push the team forwards in certain areas, just by talking to the team and I think we know the direction.
"Obviously, I have to wait and drive the car but there is always some good ideas that we have been sharing with the team that hopefully can bring the performance on track."
Perez was announced as a Red Bull driver on December 18, the Friday following the conclusion of the season in Abu Dhabi, following months of speculation after losing his Racing Point, now Aston Martin, drive to Sebastian Vettel.
The former Sauber and McLaren driver expressed his gratitude to the Red Bull hierarchy for their faith in affording him the chance to race for the team.
"I have to thank Red Bull for this tremendous opportunity," he added. "From [Dietrich] Mateschitz, from Helmut [Marko], Christian [Horner], to put their trust in me, it means a lot.
"Having the support from them to be able to join this big, historic brand is very special for me, my family. It means a lot. So I am very thankful."
