When does Wolff think Hamilton will retire?

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has given an inkling as to when Lewis Hamilton will retire from Formula One and thinks it could be 'five, six, or seven years' until the current world champion hangs up his helmet and the Silver Arrows will need to find their next star.

Hamilton has won the F1 world championship four times and now has Michael Schumacher's seven titles within reach, but has continually spoken of his desire not to stay in the sport for many more years as he wants to spend more time with family and friends.

It is unlikely to be soon, but Wolff insists that Mercedes are on the lookout for young drivers with potential in preparation for Hamilton hanging up his helmet.

"We are trying to keep our eyes open to identify the next Lewis Hamilton for in five, six or seven years, when Lewis eventually decides he has had enough of Formula 1," Wolff said.

"We are approaching this with a completely open mindset. We are even looking at karting.

"We are supporting a young Italian boy who is barely 12 years old.

“We enjoy doing that. It is just about identifying the talent, no matter where they are at the moment."

Last week, Wolff revealed that Hamilton has not yet signed a new contract with Mercedes, with his current deal running out after this season, but thinks it is a matter of time before his driver signs on the dotted line.

“Lewis has become such an important pillar within the team that it’s a no-brainer that we continue with each other,” the Austrian told the Mercedes team website.

“The discussions are ongoing in a very positive mindset and it’s just a matter of time when we seal it and put a signature to the document.”
