No 'guarantee' Mercedes will win fifth title - Wolff

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has insisted that the Silver Arrows are not taking anything for granted in the upcoming season and that there is no 'guarantee' they will win the championship and subsequently make it five constructor titles in a row.

The Silver Arrows have dominated the constructor rankings in recent years and have won the last four titles. They are the favourite to do so again, but Wolff insists that the team are not treating the season as a foregone conclusion they will win.

When asked this week whether Mercedes expects the win, he said:

“No, because all the points go back to zero. We are extremely happy and proud of the four double titles but it isn’t a guarantee that we’ll get it a fifth time.

“The mindset in the organisation is to stay humble of your own achievements but motivated and energised and hopefully try to win races again in order to fight for the title.”

Last season it was Ferrari who ran Mercedes closest in the constructor rankings, with Sebastian Vettel also providing decent competition in the driving rankings. Wolff isn't sure who will be their main rivals this campaign, but did mention that the new Pirelli tyes could play a vital role.

“It is difficult to judge,” he said.

“Last year Ferrari surprised all of us as they put a car on the track that was fast from the get-go.

“This year the rules are more stable but there’s a tyre that is coming into the equation so the truth is we don’t know.”
