Horner hopes the budget cap helps to 'safeguard smaller teams'
Red Bull put the interests of Formula 1 ahead of the the team
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner hopes the introduction of a budget cap into Formula 1 helps to 'safeguard' struggling teams.
In recent years, Caterham and Manor have pulled out of the sport due to the extreme financial pressures. Force India came back from the brink in 2018 when a consortium led by Lawrence Stroll purchased the team.
Williams are the latest team to face an uncertain future, but Horner is confident the $145million budget cap will prevent future struggles.
"The plans for the next five years make F1 a more attractive proposition to outside investment, to investors, and sponsors," Horner told Motorsport.com.
"I think that it hopefully goes some way to helping safeguard some of the smaller teams, and hopefully these new technical regulations will also help create closer racing, which is certainly the goal and intent."
On the face of it, a budget cap is not in the best interests of Red Bull, and Horner said that the team had to look at what was best for F1 as a whole.
He added: "I think you've got to look at what's right for the business, and sometimes self-interest is outweighed by interests of the sport.
"I've taken a holistic view of this, and I believe the cream will always rise to the top at the end of the day. So whatever the regulations are, it's down to us to adapt to ensure that we're as competitive as we can be."
