Red Bull confirm upgrades for Monza and Sochi

Red Bull confirm upgrades for Monza and Sochi

Martin Macdonald

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has revealed that the team will receive two new upgrades in September ahead of the Italian Grand Prix and then the Russian GP.

The team’s new partnership with engine provider Honda has started to pay dividends in more recent races with Max Verstappen claiming victories in both the Austrian GP as well as the German GP this past weekend.

There are still improvements to come, though, as Marko details what the changes will be.

"In Monza, we get an engine upgrade, in Russia new fuel. Then we should have unlocked the engine. The car will improve a lot," the Austrian told auto-motor-und-sport.

Red Bull still trail both Mercedes and Ferrari in the constructors’ championship, but Marko believes that with the implementation of the upgrades, they could put themselves back in contention to fight for the top place.

The team advisor also disputed the suggestion that Red Bull only won at the German Grand Prix due to Mercedes having a disappointing weekend, with Lewis Hamilton only gaining points due to penalties given to other drivers, while Valtteri Bottas was forced to retire after a crash.

"We do not exclude a championship. Everything came together for the first time. We won on the track, not because Mercedes had problems. Cooling the car is also part of the package. And Max has overtaken Ferrari and Mercedes on the track."
