Confirmation of F1's 2021 rules delayed again
Liberty Media's shake-up is really struggling.
Liberty Media's attempts to shake-up the regulations governing Formula 1 from 2021 have hit another stumbling block, with a deadline to present the finalised rules pushed back to October. F1 says "further refinement and additional consultation" is needed to find a solution that satisfies all 10 teams on the grid.
Liberty's 2021 vision was presented to fans, teams and media at last year's Bahrain Grand Prix, including cheaper and simpler engines, a budget cap and tweaked revenue distribution.
F1's biggest teams, Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull have all hinted at walking away should the regulations not suit them while a host of star drivers including Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo have all expressed doubts about continuing beyond 2020.
Hamilton was present in Paris this week as a breakthrough was sought, however it has proved impossible, and the teams will go back to drawing board with Liberty and the FIA.
A statement read: "Following discussions during the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal and a meeting today, 13 June, in Paris between the FIA, Formula 1, Team Principals and Technical Directors from the 10 teams, the championship's single tyre supplier and a number of drivers – Lewis Hamilton, Nico Hulkenberg and Alexander Wurz - it has been unanimously agreed to defer the final presentation of the Technical, Sporting and Financial regulations for the FIA Formula 1 World Championship for 2021 and beyond until the end of October 2019.
"While the FIA Formula 1 World Championship's key stakeholders feel the core objectives outlined for the future set of regulations have been defined, in the interests of the sport it was agreed that the best outcome will be achieved by using the extra time for further refinement and additional consultation.
"Furthermore, following today's first meeting featuring the aforementioned stakeholders, a series of additional meetings will be held over the coming months."
