Ferrari weaknesses unfixed despite strong Canadian GP
Gloomy from Mattia Binotto.
Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto moved to dampen suggestions of a Scuderia revival, despite Sebastian Vettel enjoying an impressive Canadian Grand Prix, in which he was only denied the race victory by a time penalty imposed for an unsafe manoeuvre.
Vettel led the vast majority of the race, having taken an excellent pole position the day before, but victory was taken away from him after stewards deemed his action in trying to hold onto his car after getting onto the grass at Turn 4 unsafe.
Lewis Hamilton, who inherited the win, said after qualifying two tenths off Vettel: "I hope this is a turning point for them and this is going to be very close from now on and we get to have a really serious battle throughout the season. That'd be fantastic."
However, the Scuderia team principal says the SF90 is unchanged since a Spanish Grand Prix that Mercedes dominated, and that the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve simply played into its hands more.
Binotto said: "It is very difficult to judge and forecast the performance but it is a circuit which is power sensitive and rear limited so not the same as Barcelona which is front limited. It is more similar to Bahrain rather than Barcelona.
"We knew coming [to Canada] we could be closer to Mercedes, how close, I don't think we had any clue before coming.
"I think Friday performance related to them was difficult until the track improved through the weekend with more grip and we coped with that.
"The car is exactly the same as we had in Spain, no upgrades from then, so let's say our weaknesses we have still on the car. It is as simple as that.
"We need to work, try to improve as there will be other races that are not like Canada so we need to keep fighting and challenging them."
