Alonso lines up Le Mans race

Alonso lines up Le Mans race

Fernando Alonso is in line to compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours race next season for Toyota, according to BBC Sport.

It is thought that even if the Toyota deal goes ahead, he will still be scheduled to compete for McLaren in the 2018 campaign.

When pressed by journalists this week for any information on any developments, he refused to provide any details, saying: "So far, nothing to comment. We will see. Just rumours.”

Meanwhile, Toyota themselves have not given much away themselves, with a spokesperson for them stating:

"We have no comment to make on this speculation."

However, despite any official clarification it is believed that everything is in place for the partnership to go ahead, with a source telling the BBC: "Le Mans is agreed. The rest of the season is still being negotiated but it looks like he will do most of the races."

The recent rumours regarding Alonso’s career cite his desire to claim the famous ‘triple crown’ of motorsport. The three titles include the Monaco Grand Prix, which he has already won twice, the Indianapolis 500, and Le Mans – a feat which has only been completed by one man in history, Graham Hill.

Alonso is already confirmed to compete in the Daytona 24 Hours in January which is viewed by many to be part of practice for the Spaniard’s Le Mans participation.

Despite Toyota’s status they have never won Le Mans in their history, hence their pursuit of a driver they believe can end that barren run.
