F1 visor-cam trial 'very painful' but worth it - Grosjean
Romain Grosjean says a trial of camera glasses was "very painful" but has backed Formula 1's trial of visor cameras to bring the fans closer to the sport. The Haas man is the latest to trial the innovative camera after Pierre Gasly wore the special spectacles in Monaco.
Grosjean donned the glasses for an installation lap during Friday practice for the Canadian Grand Prix. It has not been confirmed if the footage will be released.
Gasly wore the glasses around the paddock in Monte Carlo, giving fans a driver' eye view of all the action, before doing likewise while driving to the grid on race day.
The footage is far from the crystal-clear, still images produced by car's on-board cameras in the modern day, but Grosjean sees that as a positive, offering fans the chance to see exactly what driving at 200mph looks like.
Asked to describe the experience, Grosjean said: "Very painful! It doesn't quite fit well in the helmet.
"You can do an install lap but that's about it. But I love the idea, that's why I said yes even though I was pushing like fudge to get them in.
"But when you see the footage, you actually see the speed of the car, you see the work on the steering wheel, you see the vibrations, so people can actually feel what we are living.
"The onboard cameras nowadays, they are so good, so stable, you don't even feel that there is vibration on track.
"Here you get to see much more. I really hope they are going to push something to put it in a helmet, or get more of that footage, because it's awesome."
