F1 qualifying ahead of the 2026 Mexican Grand Prix is well underway, with reigning world champion Lando Norris leading the way after Q2.

Norris topped the timesheets by just shy of a tenth and a half ahead of Red Bull star Max Verstappen, with Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in third and fourth heading into Q3.

As is always the case, Q2 saw six more drivers eliminated from the session, with the F1 qualifying field now cut down to 10 drivers ahead of the shootout for pole.

The shock elimination in Q2 was undoubtedly McLaren star Oscar Piastri, who was only good enough for P13 despite there clearly being pace in the car this weekend, as evidenced by his team-mate.

Earlier in Mexico City, we did have a red flag at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, with Fernando Alonso experiencing more frustration as he was forced to park up his Aston Martin just nine minutes into qualifying.

Aston Martin have since confirmed he suffered a suspected water pressure issue linked to the ERS system in his Honda power unit. He will now line up P18 for Sunday’s grand prix, one place ahead of Ryo Hirakawa, drafted in as a late replacement for Esteban Ocon at Haas.

How does F1 Qualifying work in 2026?

There are a couple of changes to the way qualifying works this year, though not quite as sweeping as the new technical regulations most drivers and fans hate so much.

Firstly, we now have 22 cars on the grid, so instead of five cars exiting after Q1 and Q2, we will have six being eliminated. That still leaves 10 for the pole shootout in Q3.

The other notable change lies in the timings - Q3 now gets an extra minute and lasts for 13 rather than 12.
