Zanardi condition improving in "semi-intensive care"

Zanardi condition improving in "semi-intensive care"

The hospital currently treating former CART champion and Formula 1 driver Alex Zanardi has released an update on the Italian's condition.

Zanardi was admitted to hospital two months ago, after being involved in a serious accident with a 'heavy vehicle' during a national Olympic handcycling race in Italy.

The accident left the 53-year-old Italian with serious head and facial injuries and he has since undergone numerous surgical and neurosurgical procedures and was recently transferred from the Siena Hospital to Milan's San Raffaele Hospital.

The brief update reads: “After a period during which he was subjected to intensive care following hospitalisation on 24 July, the patient responded with significant clinical improvements. For this reason, he is currently assisted and treated with semi-intensive care at the Neuroreanimation Unit, directed by Professor Luigi Beretta.”

After being transferred, Zanardi was readmitted into intensive care following a fourth surgery. This latest update is the first official news on the condition of the Italian since then, July 24.

Investigations are still ongoing into the cause of the accident, as Zanardi continues his recovery.
