McLaren: Racing Point decision a "little item of the bigger issue"
McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl has said the decision to slap Racing Point with a points deduction and fine is a small part of a "bigger issue."
Although Seidl would not comment on the decision of the stewards after the ruling was released on Renault's protest into the Racing Point brake ducts, he instead focused on the broader picture.
“For me, it’s just important to make it clear that the topic of the brake ducts and the ruling from today is only one small little item of the bigger issue we are seeing," said Seidl.
"In the end, it comes down to the question - 'Is a competitor having listed parts on their car which their IP hasn’t been created by themselves?'
“That’s the topic we are talking about and the brake ducts are only one little aspect of the entire topic.”
The issue of copying parts is not new in F1, but regulations make clear that listed components must be designed and manufactured in-house - the brake ducts being such a part.
Seidl added: “I don’t want to make any statement at the moment because I need to understand first what is the ruling and what is the reasoning behind it.
“Independent of this ruling today, the position of McLaren is clear. How we want to see Formula 1 in the future, which is not different from how we have seen Formula 1 in the last 30 years.
"It should be a championship between 10 different constructors where at least the IP of all the listed parts on the car need to be created by the team without the help of any other party.”
Seidl suggested McLaren will release an official response to the decision later on Friday after reading and understanding the 14-page stewards' document.
