On This Day - Giancarlo Fisichella won for the final time

Fisichella won only three grands prix during his 229-race F1 career

Giancarlo Fisichella achieved the last of his three Formula 1 victories at the 2006 Malaysian Grand Prix, driving the Renault R26.

Starting from one of four pole positions during his 14-season career, beating Honda's Jenson Button by 0.156secs in qualifying at the Sepang circuit, the Italian was rarely troubled during the 56-lap race.

It was not a lights-to-flag triumph as Fisichella twice came out behind other cars during the two pit-stop phases, although soon regained the lead on both occasions as the stops played out.

Fisichella spearheaded a Renault one-two, finishing ahead of team-mate Fernando Alonso by 4.585secs, with Button third.

Alonso went on to make it back-to-back titles with Renault that year, with Fisichella fourth in the drivers' standings, 52 points adrift of the Spaniard.
