Verstappen: It's good to make mistakes

Sam Hall

Max Verstappen says that mistakes are a part of motorsport and, if you don't like that, "you'd better put a robot in the car."

Verstappen arrived in Formula One with a bang in 2015 and quickly made himself known for his aggressive driving style. While others were critical of his defensive tactics, Verstappen always maintained that he races within the regulations although, when a mistake was made, this argument was usually made more difficult.

Based on the complaints of other drivers, specifically with regards to his moving under braking defensive maneuvers, the FIA altered some regulations.

“Sometimes you have to drive aggressively and sometimes not. And mistakes happen,” Verstappen told Auto Zeitung. “If you don’t want that, you’d better put a robot in the car.

“But it is also quite good to make mistakes because that’s the only way to learn. People often say to themselves ‘don’t do that’ but you can’t avoid that. Especially in a racing car on the limit, it is easy to make mistakes. The main thing is always to learn from them.”
