How F1 plans to level the playing field in 2021

Liberty Media are attempting to level the playing field in Formula 1 by forcing teams to share their findings as they begin to research and develop ideas for the shift in regulations set to be introduced in 2021, according to the sport's motorsport director Ross Brawn.

Alterations in power unit regulations, aerodynamic designs and the introduction of a cost cap are all planned to be brought in as Liberty look to breathe new life in the coming years.

A collection of teams have been tasked with developing the machinery to be used from 2021 and beyond, with testing restrictions completely lifted for those concepts.

However, F1 will try to prevent those with the budgets and resources capable of doubling up from opening up a huge gap, with instructions in place to feed findings back to the entire grid.

"The FIA and ourselves have issued a framework of what the car could be like with tasks for each team to look at aspects of it," said Brawn.

"It's not enough for teams to go off and start designing a car, we're purposefully trying to hold back on that.

"We don't want teams with a lot of resource to gain a march on those who don't. But it's a difficult balance because there is a perfectly valid argument that the later you leave the issuing of the information, the more it suits the teams with a lot of resource.

"The teams will have about a year or so to work on the designs of these cars, I think that's the right sort of timescale. Once they've designed their 2020 cars, they need to be able to focus on 2021."
