'Schumacher on the path to F1'

Mick Schumacher is destined to end up in Formula 1 if he keeps delivering the kind of performances which have crowned him European Formula 3 champions, according to former grand prix winner Gerhard Berger. A surge in the second half of the F3 season secured glory for the son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher Jr has already been linked with a swift elevation to F1, with Toro Rosso's remaining free 2019 race seat potentially up for grabs.

Although DR Helmut Marko says Schumacher is not under consideration, his thrashing of Red Bull junior Dan Ticktum in recent weeks will have caught the eye and offers from big F1 academies could come the way of the 19-year-old, who has been tipped to continue his development with a season in Formula 2.

Berger raced against Schumacher's father and says the similarities between the pair are stark – backing Mick to make it onto the grid in F1 someday.

"He has prevailed and, with his podium finish, sealed the title at an early stage," Berger is quoted by Speedweek.

"But I am also very happy for Michael Schumacher and wish that he will be back with us someday to follow the further career of Mick together with us all.

"Not only does Mick look like his father, he has the same posture and same gait - he even has his father's forearms, as I noticed yesterday!

"He has proven in recent weeks in particular that he has the racing genes of Michael. If he can continue to deliver this performance, then his path will lead to Formula 1."
