Lewis Hamilton urged to resign from F1

Lewis Hamilton has been urged to bring the curtain down now on his F1 career.

The call has come from three-time champion Sir Jackie Stewart who feels his fellow Briton has done enough for the sport in winning seven world titles over the years.

After coming close to a record-breaking eighth championship last year, only to be denied in controversial circumstances in the final race in Abu Dhabi, Hamilton and Mercedes have struggled this season to adapt to the new aerodynamic regulations.

Stewart, speaking on the Convex Conversation podcast, said: "It’s time for him to resign.

"He’s got music, he’s got culture, he loves clothing, and the rag trade would be absolutely suitable for him.

"I’m sure he’ll be very successful because he’s been earning a huge amount of money, rightfully so, because he’s been the best of his time, and that's the best you can do.

"Lewis is in that group of the Ayrton Sennas and the Alain Prosts - or even the Jackie Stewarts maybe - but he's carried the sport very well."

Hamilton not coping with being second best - Stewart

Ahead of his home race of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone next weekend, the 37-year-old finds himself trailing championship leader, Red Bull's Max Verstappen, by a staggering 98 points.

Hamilton is also 34 points adrift of team-mate George Russell, and Stewart feels it is a situation that will sit uncomfortably with his fellow Briton.

"He's now struggling a little because he's a new team-mate who has been quicker than him in qualifying this year which is going to be difficult for him to handle," added Stewart.

"I would like to see him resigning now. It’s a pity he wasn’t resigning at the top but I don’t think that’s going to happen now.

"Nevertheless it’s wiser to stop than go through all the pain of not being able to do what you did before."
