Wolff - F1 track "the safest place" in Saudi Arabia

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has claimed the Jeddah Corniche Circuit is "the safest place" in Saudi Arabia after a terrorist attack on a nearby oil refinery earlier on Friday.

F1 will continue to press ahead with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend despite second practice taking place in front of a background of smoke and flames.

It was later confirmed that the explosion was caused by a missile attack by Yemeni rebels, the Houthis.

The sport and the FIA met with teams and drivers ahead of second practice and again following its conclusion to relay all the up to date information and discuss whether the Jeddah weekend should continue.

"It was a good meeting," said Wolff after leaving the second meeting.

"The drivers are going to talk now in the drivers' meeting.

"We, the team principals, have been assured that we are protected here. This is probably the safest place you can be in Saudi Arabia at the moment and that is why we are racing."

Asked if the decision to press ahead with the weekend had been a unanimous agreement, Wolff hinted there may have been some voices opposed to continuing with the weekend among the drivers, adding: "Between the team principals, yes."
