McLaren misery as Alonso crashes in Barcelona test

Originally written by Joas van Wingerden. This version is a translation.

It was supposed to be different for McLaren in the 2018 Formula One season, but they once again began a campaign with a headache after Fernando Alonso shed a wheel in a crash on the first morning of the Barcelona test.

With Renault engines replacing the Honda ones that had previously given McLaren grief, the team have set sights on muscling into the fight at the front.

But the mechanics were put to work inside the first hour of the pre-season test, after Alonso left the track at the final chicane, having completed five laps.

The incident brought out red flags as the McLaren was cleared away.

Alonso was on course to set the fastest lap of the early running, but was left dumped in the gravel after making contact with barriers around the hairpin - the right-rear tyre of his MCL33 flying loose.
