Sainz and Leclerc warned Ferrari power unit upgrades "not coming soon"

Ferrari will not be bringing its upgraded power unit to the track any time soon

Mattia Binotto has warned drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc that Ferrari's planned power unit upgrades are "not coming soon".

Teams are permitted to make a single revision to each component of its PU this year but as Ferrari is still running a number of 2020 specification parts, it is in a position to unlock performance.

Binotto has so far been evasive when revealing a date for the arrival of the new parts but has now said it will not be within the next three races, ruling out an introduction at power-hungry Monza.

“When is not yet decided," he told Sky Sports F1. "We are running it on the dyno, completing the homologation. We know it will come before the end of the season.

“For us, it was important as well in the view of 2022 because whatever we bring as an upgrade will be useful in terms of experience for next year.

“So it will be by the end of the season. It is not coming so soon. It is not coming for the next two, three races.

“But certainly a significant upgrade on the hybrid side setting new technology for us for the future.”
