Sebastian Vettel laid to rest his 'disappointing' British Grand Prix by helping to clear litter from the grandstands at Silverstone.

Vettel started the race eighth after moving up two positions in F1's inaugural sprint event but was forced to retire from on lap 40 after his Aston Martin suffered a cooling issue.

That followed an early spin at the restart, following the red-flag period caused by Max Verstappen's crash, after tangling with Fernando Alonso.

“The weekend was looking promising and, without all the problems, I should have finished well inside the points," said Vettel.

"I am very disappointed to lose the car in a wheel-to-wheel battle with Fernando [Alonso]. I am not sure exactly what happened, but I misjudged it, lost grip, and spun. After that, I was right at the back.

"In the end we did not finish the race because the team retired the car with a cooling issue.”

Despite the problems, the German was later seen clearing litter in the grandstands after the fans had vacated the circuit.

For Vettel, Aston Martin claim: "The race for the planet never ends."
