Abiteboul doesn't want engine volume increased

Renault chief Cyril Abiteboul has confessed that he does not want Formula One bosses to deliberately increase the volume of current cars as a lack of sound represents the reliability of the vehicles, and that increasing it would not be energy efficient.

In 2014, turbo hybrid engines were introduced which were much more energy efficient, but since the implementation fans have lamented the lack of noise which the engines produce as they represent a deviation from tradition and the noise which had become synonymous with F1 vehicles.

Liberty Media have responded to the criticism of the quieter cars by suggesting they could be deliberately made louder, but Abiteboul is not a fan of this idea.

"The exhaust sound is energy," the Abiteboul told Canadian radio station Rive-Sud de Montreal.

"If we begin to convert more energy into sound, then we will not achieve a good result in terms of energy efficiency.

"A loud sound from the engine and the economy of the engine are two conflicting goals."

Instead of turning up the volume, Abiteboul thinks it would be a better idea to wait until the next generation of Formula One fans to appreciate energy efficiency rather than complain about a lack of noise.

"A generation of fans who have never heard V10 or V8 engines will soon grow up, and for them quiet engines will be the norm," he continued.

"Perhaps formula one moved from one stage to the next too quickly and today is somewhat ahead of its time."
