Bahrain first featured on the Formula 1 calendar in 2004 and this year hosts the Formula 1 season-opener for the third time.

This year marks the 17th running of the Bahrain Grand Prix. After the first race victory was taken by Michael Schumacher in his final championship-winning season for Ferrari, only six other drivers have tasted success in the Gulf State.

Of this number, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel are the most successful - the pair each with four wins to their name.

Last year's race is remembered chiefly for the horrific lap one crash involving Romain Grosjean which saw the Frenchman effectively call time on his F1 career two races early after staging a miraculous escape from the burning wreckage of his Haas.

Although previously hosting F1 16 times for the Bahrain Grand Prix, last year saw the circuit also play host to the Sakhir Grand Prix which was contested on the venue's 'Outer Circuit'.
