Mansell: McLaren problems prove there is 'something wrong' in F1

Former Formula One world champion Nigel Mansell has insisted that McLaren's inability to challenge for constructor championships over the past few years proves that there is 'something wrong' in the sport, as a team as big as the Woking outfit should be up there with the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull.

Mercedes have won four world championships in a row and are going for their fifth in 2018 which would further emphasise their dominance in the constructor rankings. Their only real competitors in that time have been Ferrari and Red Bull, while McLaren have not won the constructor's title for 20 years.

McLaren still remain one of the most prestigious teams in the history of the sport, and Mansell thinks their inability to compete at the moment shows there is 'something wrong' in F1.

"We've got a backlog of great drivers wanting to come into Formula 1 and we need more manufacturers with at least 26 cars on the grid," Mansell said.

"Hopefully Liberty are going to get some new regulations that everyone will embrace and there will be a more level playing field where people can be competitive.

"There is something wrong with any sport when you have, as a good or bad example, an incredible team like McLaren who have won so many world championships and an incredible manufacturer of engines like Honda, they couldn't get it together.

"It shouldn't be that difficult."

Last week Mansell spoke to Sky Sports and expressed a desire for more manufacturers to enter the sport, but believes they will put off by the fact that Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull are so far ahead of the other teams with the resources they have.
